Poker Implied Odds - Poker Strategy Tip
Implied odds can be thought of as an extension of pot odds. It is much harder to calculate implied odds since they rely on the chance that you will make more money than your current pot odds. This means that someone else at the table would have to bet into the pot and making assumptions about that is both unreliable and difficult to do. Basically implied odds help you to just think about the possible amount you stand to make in addition to your current odds. Generally most players use it as a mechanism to rationalize a call and also a way to choose how to play their hand.
Implied odds rely heavily on your hand.
For example, if two aces hit on the flop and you have an ace as well,
then your opponents are going to worry about that third ace. You may
not get anyone to chase your bet and so your implied odds would not
be as good as if you had a three in your hand and two more threes
hit on the flop. Since people typically are less afraid of or take
less notice of the lowly threes, then a player might be able to pull
one or two people into the pot with him. In this case his implied
odds are much better; which not only supports the move to call but
also depending on the player's style may support an ambitious bet,
or a slow play.
It is the example like the above one that is a great example as to why implied odds are so difficult to actually calculate, since it rests on the decisions of others. Although just thinking about the probability of implied odds can help tip the scales in conjunction with pot odds as to whether a call or raise is in order. If you were to mathematically figure out implied odds, it would result in something like this. If you had a $10 pot and you had to put in $1 to call, you would have 10:1 pot odds. But if you are sure that you will get at least one more either call or raise, you could assume your implied odds to be 11:1 or even 12:1. That in turn might in some situations in which you can think players will chase make the difference whether to call raise or fold.
So although no real concrete facts result from calculating implied odds, the fact of the matter is that it can help you out of a sticky situation and should always be at least considered. If for no other reason than thinking about implied odds may help you understand your opponents own moves because the better players will certainly be at least considering implied odds on each hand.
